Cary, NC — A made-to-order doughnut shop now calls Cary home. At the new Duck Donuts on Wrenn Drive, customers can have their choice of toppings and watch as their doughnut is made right in front of them.
Locations in NC, VA, and NJ
So far, the franchise has opened four stores in Virginia (with four more on the way) and five in North Carolina, including Cary and other towns including Corolla, Duck, Kill Devil Hills, and Kitty Hawk. Middleton, New Jersey, will soon house a Duck Donuts as well.
The new Cary location is located in Wrenn Plaza off of Kildaire Farm Road (near the post office). A large, clear sign makes it easy to spot.
Duck Donuts are warm and made-to-order for each customer with a large variety of glazes and toppings. The glaze, or coating selections are vast, including customer’s choice of cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, classic glaze, vanilla or chocolate icing, lemon icing, peanut butter icing, maple icing, and strawberry icing.
Topping choices include shredded coconut, chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, chopped peanuts, and bacon. After you order your donuts, which are available in singles ($1.20), half dozens ($6.75), dozens ($11.95), or a bucket of 18 ($16.50), you’ll be handed an order number.
During the short wait, you can watch other donuts be boiled and cooked (much like the display window at Krispy Kreme in Downtown Raleigh).
I ordered a half dozen donuts (all different) and was able to watch as staff dipped, sprinkled, or drizzled the different glazes and toppings on each. The donuts were warm, tasty, and filling.
Coffee & Breakfast Sandwiches
While donuts are obviously the specialty of the restaurant, customers can grab other breakfast items too. Duck Donuts sells breakfast bagels with eggs, meat, and cheese, cream cheese, or peanut butter and jelly. Customers can also have their breakfast sandwich on English muffins.
Coffee is available at a self-serve station but, behind the counter, espresso drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, and mochas are available. The store has only been open for a little over a month, but lines are already forming. The dining atmosphere is clean, bright, and open.
